Kansas has NO mandatory statewide building code — local jurisdictions adopt their own codes. This creates significant variation across the state. The Wichita/Sedgwick County MABCD area has the most current codes (2024 IBC). Johnson County cities (Overland Park, Olathe, Shawnee, Lenexa) commonly use 2018 ICC. Some western/rural cities still use 2006 or 2009 editions. Kansas is in the heart of Tornado Alley — tornadoes are a major natural hazard. Hail damage is extremely common.
