Important Notes

Maryland adopted 2021 ICC codes as the Maryland Building Performance Standards (MBPS) effective July 2022. The MBPS is mandatory statewide — all 23 counties and Baltimore City enforce locally. Maryland spans Climate Zones 4A (most of state) and 5A (Garrett County mountains). Wind speeds range from 110 mph (western) to 150 mph (Atlantic coast). The Chesapeake Bay region has unique environmental considerations including flood zones, coastal erosion, and Critical Area regulations. Garrett County in western MD has mountain climate with 30 psf snow loads. Worcester County (Ocean City) has hurricane-force wind requirements up to 150 mph. Baltimore City has its own building department and additional local codes.
