Important Notes

Mississippi adopted 2021 ICC codes effective January 1, 2024. The state is a HOME RULE state — local jurisdictions can adopt more restrictive codes but cannot go below state minimums. The Gulf Coast (Harrison, Hancock, Jackson counties) has enhanced hurricane requirements with design wind speeds up to 150 mph. Northwest Mississippi is in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (SDC D in some areas) — one of the most seismically active areas east of the Rockies. Central Mississippi is in "Dixie Alley" tornado corridor. The Mississippi Building Code Council (MBCC) oversees statewide code adoption. The State Fire Marshal's Office provides enforcement support. Some rural areas have limited code enforcement.
