Important Notes

North Dakota has an extreme continental climate with severe winters. Frost depth reaches 48-60 inches — deep foundations required statewide. Ground snow loads 25-45 psf with significant drifting potential. Ice barriers are mandatory statewide. Climate Zones 6A (south) and 7 (north) — among the coldest in the lower 48. Design temperatures can reach -30°F to -40°F. Wind speeds 105-120 mph. Tornado risk exists in eastern ND (Tornado Alley fringe). The Bakken oil region (western ND) has seen rapid construction growth requiring enhanced code enforcement. Seismic risk is very low (Category A). The State Building Code was updated to 2024 ICC codes effective Jan 1, 2026.
