Important Notes

South Dakota spans the northern Great Plains with extreme weather. Tornado Alley extends into eastern SD — ICC 500 storm shelters recommended. Heavy snow loads (25-56 psf) are a major design consideration, especially in the Black Hills. Frost depth reaches 42-60 inches — deep foundations required. The state is in Climate Zones 5A (southeast) and 6A (rest). Ice barriers are mandatory statewide. Seismic risk is low (Category A/B). The Black Hills region (Spearfish, Deadwood, Lead) has the most extreme snow and frost requirements. Most municipalities have adopted 2021 ICC codes; some smaller cities still use 2012 or 2018 editions.
