The state has extensive coal mining history — mine subsidence is a concern in many regions. The WV Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES) provides guidance on mine subsidence areas. Flood-prone areas are common due to mountainous terrain and narrow valleys. The WV Flood Tool provides detailed mapping. Seismic Design Category B applies statewide (low to moderate risk). The state has 55 counties. Many rural areas rely on state-level enforcement through the Fire Marshal's Office.
